Designing for North Somerset gardens
Gardens across North Somerset and the Chew Valley come with their own character — and often a few challenges too. Good garden design starts with understanding what will thrive in your space and how to make the most of its setting.
I regularly design for conditions such as:
Heavy clay soils
Sloping plots and level changes
Exposed, windy gardens
Shade from mature trees
Rural boundaries and hedgerows
Gardens with views that need thoughtful framing
A well-designed garden should feel beautiful, practical and easy to live with — designed in harmony with the site.
Garden design for rural, village and family gardens
Every garden is different. Some clients want a calm space to retreat to, while others need a garden that works for family life, entertaining, pets, or low-maintenance planting.
I design gardens to suit how you live, including:
Relaxed rural gardens that sit naturally within the landscape
Courtyard and terrace gardens with strong structure
Family gardens with practical zoning for play, dining, and relaxed outdoor living
Planting-led designs full of colour, texture and seasonal interest
Low-maintenance schemes with year-round impact

“We had the absolute pleasure of working with Heather as our landscape gardener, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. She was fantastic from start to finish—really listening to our ideas and concerns, and bringing them to life in a way that exceeded our expectations.”
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in a garden design package?
Garden design services are available in three tiers, allowing you to choose the level of detail that best suits your project and budget. (More details here).
A typical package may include site visits, concept design (including mood boards and 3D visuals), detailed landscape and planting plans, and guidance on materials and suppliers.
Can you help with planting design only?
Yes. I often work on planting-only projects, whether that’s refreshing existing borders or creating a full planting plan to bring structure, colour, and seasonal interest to a garden. More detail on Planting Design can be found here.
Do you work with local landscapers during the build?
Yes. I regularly collaborate with trusted local landscapers and can liaise with them throughout the build to ensure the design is implemented correctly and to help resolve any issues that arise.
Will you help guide the project once the design is finished?
Yes. I offer design support during the build stage if required. This can include clarifying details, answering questions from the landscaper, or making small adjustments to ensure the design is delivered as intended.
How long does the garden design process take?
This depends on the size and complexity of the garden, but most projects take around 4–6 weeks from the initial consultation through to the delivery of final plans. I will keep you updated throughout the process so you are informed at every stage.
Do you design both small village gardens and larger rural plots?
Yes. I work across a wide range of spaces, from small village courtyards to larger rural gardens. Each design is bespoke and carefully tailored to both the client and the character of the site. Take a look at my Portfolio for more details.
What types of gardens do you specialise in?
I specialise in naturalistic garden design with soft, layered planting that creates relaxed, wildlife-friendly spaces connected to their surroundings. My aim is always to design bespoke gardens that reflect both the client and the site.
What challenges do you consider in Chew Valley gardens?
Gardens in the Chew Valley often present specific conditions such as heavy clay soils, sloping ground, exposure to wind, mature boundaries, and expansive rural views. I design with these factors in mind to create gardens that feel natural, practical, and easy to live with.
