How much does hiring a garden designer cost?

The cost of a garden designer will vary depending on your budget, project size, and personal requirements.

Initially it might seem like you’re investing a large amount of money before any physical work has begun but, the design process is essential to ensure you get the garden you want. You will be investing in a professional who is full of ideas and practical knowledge from experience in the industry and who has been trained to create a well thought out, cohesive and durable garden. The initial cost stops you wasting money on the garden in the long run. I have met so many people who have spent a fortune buying plants for their garden without first enlisting professional help and sadly, these plants weren’t right for the space and did not last.

Many people are now realising the importance of their outside space as an extension of their home and research has shown that investing in a quality garden design can increase the value of your property by 20%.

On average, the budget for the build of a garden will be 5% to 10% of the value of the home. The cost of hiring a designer to help create your ideal outdoor space will be approximately 10% - 20% of this budget.

As a ball-park figure, you should allow £100 - £150 per square meter of your garden. Hard landscaping costs tends to be higher per square meter than plants but, over time, as you include the cost of maintenance, it averages out to be similar.

Having an idea of your budget for the entire process will help me to design a garden that is within this allowance and will include practical ideas that will sit within this financial framework.

All fees are up front and in writing so there are no surprises. Any additional costs are always agreed upon in writing before any work gets started.
