How easy is it to create low maintenance planting?

Very easy — when it’s designed properly. Achieving truly low maintenance planting starts at the design stage, which is why working with an experienced plant specialist makes such a difference. Understanding plant habit, growth patterns, and environmental preferences allows me to select reliable, well-suited species that will thrive in your specific soil and site conditions.

Plants are living organisms that respond to their surroundings. With detailed knowledge of their characteristics, I can create planting schemes using dependable varieties that are naturally suited to the space — reducing the need for constant intervention.

I also focus on plants that provide multi-season interest, so the garden looks beautiful throughout the year. Many of these require minimal pruning, as seedheads are often left in place over winter for structure and wildlife value. Typically, maintenance involves a single annual cutback in late February, allowing the planting to refresh and regenerate for the new season.

When I describe planting as “low maintenance,” I mean more than just reduced pruning. Naturalistic planting — where plants are placed closely together — creates a dense community that suppresses weeds by limiting available space and light.

Of course, no garden is completely maintenance-free. As a living system, it will change with the seasons and weather. Occasional “editing” may be needed — such as removing a damaged stem or tidying growth after heavy rain. These small, simple adjustments keep the planting looking its best without requiring constant effort.

If you live in North Somerset, Bristol or Bath, and need help creating a low maintenance garden, I’d love to hear from you!
